SPARTA-Marilyn Victoria Roerig, 92, of Sparta, died on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at Morrow Memorial Home in Sparta. She was born June 6, 1932 to Victor and Miriam (Bergh) Ahrens on the family farm near Brandon, MN.

In 1950, she graduated from Sterling High School in Sterling, IL. Then on November 29, 1952, she married Howard F. Roerig, at Messiah Lutheran Church, in Sterling. Their first homes were in Elmhurst, IL, Lake Geneva, WI, and Richmond, IL; before settling in Genoa City, WI, in a house they built. In December of 1966, they moved to Freeport, IL. They made their final move to Sparta, WI in 1972, where they owned and ran an A&W Root Beer Stand until 1980. After selling the business, they spent much of their time traveling around the U.S. in an RV. Howard passed away on August 13, 1999.

Marilyn spent much of her time as a seamstress. She enjoyed sewing clothes for others, including wedding and bridesmaid dresses for herself, and her daughter. She also altered clothes for a men’s shop, for a time. As time went on, she started quilting, and made many quilts and hangings over the years. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening, and hiking.

Marilyn is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Ebers of Concordia, MO; sons, Randy (Virginia) Roerig of Marathon, WI and Brad (Julie) Roerig of Chandler, AZ; two grandsons, Joe (Mindy) Roerig of Appleton, WI and Matt (Amy) Roerig of Brainerd, MN; three great-granddaughters, Madison, Zoey, and Quinn; two great-grandsons, Gavin and Gunnar; brother, David (Sharon) Ahrens of Florida; and sister, Beth (Dave) Curtis of Onalaska, WI.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor (Miriam) Ahrens, sister, LaVerle (Bergh) Wilken and husband, Howard F Roerig.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 26, 2024 at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Sparta, with Reverend Jonathan Hackbarth officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Sparta.
