Early in the morning of Saturday, September 7th, a Fort McCoy police officer witnessed a vehicle cross the center lane on State Hwy 16 and county road A. The officer tried to make contact with the driver of the vehicle, but the driver evaded the officer. The officer followed the vehicle onto county road A but determined to stop the pursuit when the vehicle exceeded a safe speed.

The officer continued following at a safe distance, trying to keep the vehicle in sight. Another Fort McCoy police officer saw a vehicle turn south, from State Highway 21, onto Ginger Road. The Fort McCoy police officers met at Ginger Road and located the vehicle off the road near the railroad tracks.

The Monroe County medical examiner pronounced a 17-year-old male dead at the scene, and a 20-year-old woman passenger was taken by Gundersen Airlift to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The 17-year-old was a Sun Prairie resident.
