Donald J. Lee, 70, of Cocoa Beach, FL, formerly of Onalaska, WI, passed away suddenly Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at Gundersen Medical Center in La Crosse, WI. He was born March 28, 1954, to Sidney and Inez (Tollefson) Lee in Durand, WI.

After serving his country as a member of the US Army in Hawaii for two years, Don returned to La Crosse with a renewed sense of purpose. He furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (UWL), where he spent two formative years preparing for a future that would blend his love for people with his business wisdom.

Don’s professional journey was varied and interesting. He initially began working at G. Heileman Brewing in La Crosse, where he served as district manager. His entrepreneurial spirit later led him to own a liquor distribution company, though it was his acquisition of The Wharf in Onalaska in 1988 that truly defined his career. For three decades, Don was the beloved proprietor of the establishment, fostering a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all who walked through its doors.

Life was not all work for Don, who found joy and companionship in his personal life as well. He married Lori Lunde, they had one daughter, Lindsay. On April 25, 1997, Don wed Lynette Ross, and together they cultivated a life rich in love and shared interests. The couple adored their second home in Cocoa Beach, Florida, where they spent their winters since 1996, with their Florida friends and the company of each other.

Don’s enthusiasm for sports was legendary. From organizing family ball games in his younger days to his unwavering support for family at their sporting events. A devoted fan of the Wisconsin Badgers, Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and Milwaukee Bucks, Don’s spirit was synonymous with the thrill of competition. His passion for golf was particularly strong, and he was known for his competitive edge—a trait that once earned him a car, for a hole in one, at Coulee Golf Bowl.

Beyond the greens and the stadiums, Don found excitement in the world of horse racing and fantasy football, where he could combine his strategic mind with his love for sports. His generous nature was evident in his willingness to help others and his readiness to give people a second chance. This kindness extended to all areas of his life and was a testament to the depth of his character.

Don is survived by his wife of 27 years, Lynette Lee; his daughter, Lindsay (Troy) Nelson and their children, Livvy, Griffin, and Jaxon; Don’s siblings, LaVonne (Calvin) Olson, Faye (Tom) Thielke, and Dennis (Debra) Lee; brother-in-law, Dennis Swiggum; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Inez Lee; sister, Sonja Swiggum; and nephews, Troy Swiggum and Kale Olson.

Following Don’s wishes a Celebration of Life with music, food, and camaraderie, will be held Saturday, September 14, 2024, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the American Legion, 731 Sand Lake Rd, Onalaska, WI.
