Gene Glenn Wood “Woody”, age 85, returned to his Lord Jesus Christ on April 22, 2024 with his family by his side. Gene was born August 9, 1938 on his Grandfather’s farm in rural Wilton, Wisconsin to Glenn and Irene Wood. He graduated from High School in Elgin, Illinois in 1956 where he met his wife, Virginia “Ginny” (Ball) Wood. They were married September 22, 1956 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Elgin.

An avid outdoorsman, Gene enjoyed camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing with his family and friends. He shared this dedication with many over the years as a Scout Leader and a Hunter Safety Instructor. His career also kept him in the outdoors. Many of his 32 years with the US Postal Service were enjoyed in Baraboo, Wisconsin, where he retired in 1992. Gene and Ginny delighted in volunteering together at every opportunity. Their combined endeavors included St. John’s  4-H Club, summers at the Circus World Museum, wintering at Hot Springs Nat’l Park and fostering a number of children who needed love in their lives.

He is survived by his children Craig (Wendy) Wood of Wisconsin Rapids, Curt (JoAnn) Wood of Davenport Washington, Connie (Kenley) Mann of River Falls, and Carin (Rodney) Wolf of Beaver Dam, grandchildren Johnathan (Courtney) Wood, Christina (Manuel) Ramirez, Amber (Justin) Pinkerton, Justin (Brittany) Wood, Ruth Mann, Jeremiah Mann, Rebecca (Adrian) Casas-Limonas, Rachel Mann, Christopher Wolf, Lisa (Thomas) Holder, 10 great-grandchildren, sister Dawn Burns, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia, his sister Gwen, and his parents.

A Celebration of Life for Gene and Ginny is scheduled for Sunday, September 22, 2024, their wedding anniversary. Details will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Feed the Children, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Baraboo, or any Veteran related cause close to your heart.
