WARRENS- Gene George Pankonien, 77 of Warrens, Wisconsin went to his heavenly home on February 27, 2025.

Gene was born on September 17, 1947, in Amery, Wisconsin, to George and Muriel (Fredericks). In addition to his sister and 3 brothers, he had a multitude of cousins that he spent a great deal of time with while growing up. Gene also spent childhood summers working on his Uncle Raymond and Aunt Ellen’s dairy farm in Turtle Lake. He loved sharing memories of his adventures on the farm.

After graduating from Amery High School in 1965, Gene attended Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College. He earned a degree in architectural drafting and joined HSR Associates of La Crosse in 1968. For over 44 years he played a pivotal role in many of the firm’s most notable projects. His attention to detail and unwavering commitment to excellence were a testament to his craft. Throughout his years at HSR, Gene became a mentor to many, sharing his knowledge and passion for architecture with those around him. His legacy is not only in the architectural documents he produced but in the relationships he built and the impact he had on the firm and the industry.

Next to drafting, Gene loved camping and was a staple at Jellystone Park in Warrens for nearly 30 years. From campers and motorhomes to the beautiful park home on Lot 94S – he made life-long friends and genuinely enjoyed his Jellystone family. In addition to countless projects for fellow residents, he designed and helped build many of the park’s structures including the guard shack, pavilion, and cafe. You cannot walk too many steps in that park without seeing some of his work! He also wintered in Mesa, Arizona for several years making new friends and memories as he went, but his favorite place to call home was Warrens.

Humor and stories were Gene’s favorite language. To say that he was happiest when he was telling (and re-telling!) stories and jokes is an understatement - though strawberry shakes and banana crème pie might run a close second! He always had time for family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

Gene is survived by his sweetheart Audrey (Pollack), his 2 children, Michael (Pam), and Michelle Lubinski, and their mother, Elizabeth (Benavides-Johnson); 3 grandchildren, Amanda (Jason) Boggess, Christopher (Danielle), Ryan (Samantha); 7 great-grandchildren, Donara, Alycesaundra, Rylee, Cecil, Illa Mae, Bentlee, and Nova; sister Pat Smith, twin brother Dean (Gloria), brother Jim (Pam); and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is also survived by his extended Pollack family; Kevin (Ona), Kurt (Amy), Craig (Carrie); 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Muriel, younger brother, Dell and many beloved aunts and uncles.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home in Tomah, with Pastor David Weber officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to gather and share their favorite stories of Gene from 10:00 am until the time of the service.
