Sparta School Board members would not share details about an employee who will be placed on administrative leave and investigated. According to the meeting minutes, the Board held an hour and a half meeting on Tuesday, March 29, to discuss the matter.

The meeting, which was in closed session, was regarding an individual’s employment per Wisconsin Statute 19.85(1)(c) Considering employment, promotion, compensation or performance evaluation data of any public employee over which the governmental body has jurisdiction or exercises responsibility.

In the closed session, a motion carried to allow the Wisconsin Association of School Boards to hire a third-party investigator.

An amended motion carried to place an employee on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

School Board members would not confirm if the meeting was regarding Sparta Area School District Superintendent Amy Van Deuren, who sent a letter to district staff on March 31. “I wanted to let you know that I will be out of the office temporarily for personal reasons,” according to the letter. “While I am away, please direct any district-related questions to the high school Principal Sam Russ.”

This is a developing story and any updates will be available as soon as we can.
