TOMAH - Alvira Chambers went to be in the arms of our Lord and Savior on September 12, 2023. Alvira Rose Root was born to Alta and Erwin Root on May 20, 1926. She spent her early years as a farm girl in rural Tomah. She was joined in marriage to Chester Chambers on December 4, 1946. Vi and Chet raised their three children, Gary, Greg and Gale for many years in Boone County, IL before moving to the family homestead in Tomah, WI.

It is rare to find someone in this life that changes you just because you knew them. That is the beautiful person that Vi Chambers was.  She was the fierce and loving matriarch of her family! A role model and loved by many.

Vi saw so many changes over her 97 years of life. She grew up with horse and buggy, lived through the depression and WWII and was savvy enough to have a Facebook account! She was an incredibly strong woman who fought fiercely for her family. She earned the nickname “Robo Granny” due to always needing to be busy. She lived independently until the very end and would work circles around most people 20 years her junior. Vi enjoyed her family and loved having many family events at her home. She looked forward to her great grandchildren stopping in regularly. Vi enjoyed traveling around the country to visit many family members and to new destinations! As busy as Vi would be, she always took time out to enjoy her favorite show at 11:00 and you better not interrupt her.

She is survived by her three children, Gary (Linda) Chambers of South Beloit, IL, Greg (Lori) Chambers of Garden Prairie, IL and Gale (Ron) Cochems of Tomah, WI. Her grandchildren, Tanya Chambers-Doll, Cim Chambers, Matt Chambers, Tina Cochems-Wendt, and Clint Cochems. Great-grandchildren-Sarek, Jacob, Jordan, Ryan, Carson, Landon, and Wyatt, Logan, Aiden, and Gabriella.  Her great-great-grandchildren Jameson, Madelynn, Jace, and Jensen (Gus.)  She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She is proceeded in death by her parents, brothers Jesse Root, Louis Root, sister Lola Ackerman and two great-granddaughters Hope and Erin Briney.

The family would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the staff of Tomah Health for their kindness and caring treatment of Vi. Mitchelle and Jade were so kind to Vi and family during her final days.

A private family burial will be held at a later date.
