Water St. Fire causes many smoke filled units

On Thursday, November 14 at 12:52pm the Sparta Area Fire District was dispatched to a reported apartment fire at 114 North Water Street.
The fire was in apartment number 3 on the second floor, the tenant was using an air fryer to cook some food which started the kitchen area on fire.
The fire was quickly extinguished by fire crews and 5 other apartments on the second floor had to be ventilated with minor smoke damage.
The tenants in apartment number 3 were not able to return to their apartment and the American Red Cross is assisting them with housing.
Three downstairs businesses also had some smoke damage and had to be ventilated because of the fire.
This fire is a reminder about working smoke detectors which alerted other tenants of the fire.
The cause is under investigation and the building is insured.
All other tenants on the second floor were able to return to their apartments.
Chief Mike Arnold said the fire department was on the scene for 2 1/2 hours.
The SAFD was assisted by the Sparta Police Department,Sparta Ambulance Service and the Monroe County 911 Center.
