SPARTA-Vernon “Vern” Charles Kerling, 95, passed away in his home on January 26, 2025 with his children at his side.

Born in Austin, Minnesota, Vern was the youngest of ten children. Inspired by his older brothers, he followed their path into military service, serving in the Navy during the Korean War. A proud Navy veteran, he carried the values of duty, resilience, and integrity throughout his life, leaving a lasting legacy of service and devotion to his country.

On May 1, 1954, Vern married Patricia Knutson. Together, they shared 52 years of marriage until Pat’s passing. Their life was filled with laughter, love, treasured friendships and countless adventures. Later in life, Vern was fortunate to share nine wonderful years with Donna Krebsbach, who became a loved member of the family.

Vern was deeply committed to his community, dedicating his time and talents to making a difference. He served as past president of the Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, and several other organizations that benefited under his leadership. A true entrepreneur, Vern owned the Downtown Motel and the Coach House Restaurant, where his children learned the value of hard work through their first jobs - lessons that shaped them for a lifetime.

Above all, Vern was a devoted family man. He took immense pride in the life he built and the family he cherished. His children were constantly reminded of his love and kindness, and his wisdom will continue to guide them. His warmth, humor, and generous spirit touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Vern is survived by his five children: Diana (Dave) Prendergast of Onalaska, Wisconsin; Deb Larvick of Sparta, Wisconsin; Tom (Sue) Kerling of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Ellen Kerling of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; and Anne Kerling of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is also survived by his brother, Leo Kerling, of Dubuque, Iowa. He leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and countless friends.

“We begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget.”
