The Timberwolves started the new season off on the wrong foot with a 7-0 loss to Waunakee on Thursday, March 26.
Tomah pitcher Anna Wall gave up a hit to the first batter of the season in Waunakee’s Madelyn Hughes. Hughes put herself in scoring position by stealing second and later third base. After back-to-back strikeouts for Wall, Jade Keene came to the plate. Keene slapped the ball in front of home plate and the throw to Timberwolves’ first baseman Brooklyn Chapman bounced off her glove as Hughes crossed home plate to make it 1-0.
Errors proved to be an issue for Tomah. In the top of the third, after a one out walk, Lauren Hansen hit the ball back up the middle into center field to bring in Hughes from second base. A throwing error by the Timberwolves allowed Hansen to keep running all the way home to make it 3-0.
Waunakee scored three more runs in the fifth inning, including one that came off a wild pitch. The Warriors added one more run in the top of the seventh on a pitch that got past catcher Nola Mullikin.
“We made too many mistakes, plain and simple,” Tomah head coach Daniel Wall said.
Wall pitched seven innings and gave up seven runs, three of them earned, on six hits, and recorded 12 strikeouts.
Tomah couldn’t get much going at the plate in their attempts to rally. The Timberwolves mustered only four hits in the game and struck out 10 times against Ashlyn Petrick. Chapman led THS with two hits.
The coach said it was a bad matchup for the Timberwolves’ batters, especially in the season-opener.
“Petrick’s stuff right now, we don’t do well against historically,” Daniel Wall said. “So we have to find a way to not swing at pitches that are off the plate. Our kids like to attack, sometimes you have to be a patient attacker. I think with it being the first game and not seeing a lot of pitches like that, it does affect you at the plate.”
Tomah’s next game is at Baraboo on Tuesday, March 31, at 5 p.m.
