Tomah girls tennis numbers keep growing

Posted

The Tomah girls tennis program is enjoying a boost in turnout this season — something they hope means improvement this year while also being a sign of good things to come for the team from a more long-term view.

The Timberwolves lost just three seniors to graduation from their 2025 squad, so they bring back a veteran core along with some newcomers as the turnout numbers have increased from under 20 last season to about 25 heading into this fall.

“We have a lot of experienced players coming back,” said Tomah head coach Ben Bannan. “Our team grew quite a bit this year too. So, a lot of new faces, a lot of young people. Hopefully we can train them up well and hopefully that bodes well for the future too.”

Among the returnees for Tomah are their top three singles players: junior Nora Klouda and seniors Audrey Hoffman and Mackenzie Janz.

The Timberwolves began their 2026 season with a trio of duals at the Eau Claire Invite on Aug. 15, where they defeated Eau Claire Regis 6-1, suffered a 7-0 defeat to the host Huskies and narrowly lost 4-3 to Chippewa Falls. They then trounced Black River Falls 7-0 during a road dual last Tuesday.

Janz has been the most successful singles player thus far, starting the season with a 3-1 record. The No. 2 doubles team of seniors Abigail and Peyton Rapp are also 3-1, including a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Abbie Martell and Claire Kidd of Chippewa Falls and a tiebreak win against Lilah Ottum and Sienna Koebler of Black River Falls.

Sparta began its season with a 7-0 dual loss at Baraboo last Monday.
