Thomas Warren Hanson, of Rockland, Wisconsin, passed away unexpectedly on March 6, 2025. He was born on August 25, 1948, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to Lester and Clara Hanson.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Edythe Ann Coppage (née Hanson) and Claire Armstrong (née Hanson); his brother, Lester Douglas Hanson; and his son, Mark Brian Hanson.

He is lovingly remembered by his children, Scott Hanson (Yevgeniya), Andrea Mayer-Bruestle (Wayne), and Heidi Hanson; his grandchildren, Mikayla Mayer, Tristan Mayer (Cheyenne), Olivia Crowder (Chase), Gabrianna Bruestle, and Eydie Bruestle; and his great-grandson, Jamie Crowder. He also leaves behind many dear cousins, extended family, and friends across Wisconsin, the United States, and around the world.

Thomas graduated from Bangor High School in 1965 and attended UW-La Crosse before marrying Linda Nelson in 1967.

Throughout his life, he pursued many passions. A talented musician, he played the cornet, trumpet, and concertina—and had recently acquired a cello, eager to learn yet another instrument. He was also a creative inventor, designing a unique “media bed” and crafting multiple variations of leg braces for his beloved dog, Kiefer.

An avid photographer and traveler, Thomas explored the United States, Europe, and Russia. His adventures took him from road trips across the country to visits with family and friends in distant places. Most recently, he traveled to see the Dignity of Earth and Sky statue in Chamberlain, South Dakota, and spent Thanksgiving with his children and grandchildren in Delphi, Indiana. He had envisioned an ambitious cross-country road trip—heading south to Arizona, driving along the Pacific Coast Highway, visiting the Nez Perce lands of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, and returning home through the Dakotas. Though he was unable to complete this journey, his adventurous spirit lives on in the memories of those who knew and loved him.

Thomas had a diverse career, working as a wedding photographer and for Northern Engraving and Universal Coating before founding TW Homes in River Falls, Wisconsin, in 1987. In 1997, he and Linda parted ways, and a decade later, he returned to the family farm to care for his brother Douglas. After Douglas’s passing, Thomas remained there, dedicating himself to organic farming.

Known for his sharp intellect and engaging conversations, Thomas had a gift for connecting with people. Whether discussing politics, current events, or life’s great mysteries, he enjoyed thoughtful debates and shared his broad knowledge with those around him. His wanderlust, curiosity, and love for meeting new people shaped the way he lived his life—with adventure, warmth, and an open heart.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on May 17, 2025, at St. Peter’s Parish Catholic Church in Rockland, WI. A luncheon to follow at the Parish..

Thomas was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed. His legacy of exploration, creativity, and kindness will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
