Sparta-Tomah Broadcasting sells to Magnum Communications

Magnum Communications, Inc. has reached an agreement with Sparta-Tomah Broadcasting Co., Inc., to acquire WCOW-FM, Sparta, WI; WKLJ-AM, Sparta, WI; W271CM, Sparta, WI; and WFBZ-FM, Trempealeau, WI, with an application for the sale to be filed with the Federal Communications Commission.

The seller, Sparta-Tomah Broadcasting Co., Inc., is based in Sparta, Wisconsin.  The company operates a cluster of stations serving western Wisconsin and the La Crosse market. These stations comprise the company’s remaining media holdings.

WCOW is celebrating its 75th anniversary and is a seven-time Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Small Market Station of the Year winner.  Last year Ben & Arnie won the Country Music Association’s award for Best Small Market Personality of the Year.

The buyer, Magnum Communications, Inc., is part of Magnum Media, a Wisconsin radio group comprised of Magnum Communications, Inc., Magnum Radio, Inc., and Magnum Broadcasting, Inc., operating 6 full power AM stations, 14 full power FM stations, and 18 FM translators in Wisconsin, eastern Minnesota, and northern Illinois.

Reid Magnum stated, “In June, when my dad was inducted into the Wisconsin Broadcasters Hall of Fame, he spoke in the video about WCOW being the very first radio station he was ever in at age 4. His uncle, Len DeSomer, was an announcer at WCOW in 1967.  On top of that, my mom and dad sat with Pink Rice at the first WBA dinner they attended in 1990.”

WCOW-FM operates at 97.1 MHz, with 100.00 kW at 587’ HAAT.

WKLJ-AM operates at 1290 kHz, with 5.00 kW day and 0.059 kW night.

W271CM operates at 102.1 MHz, with 0.250 kW at 440’ HAAT.

WFBZ-FM operates at 105.5 MHz, with 2.10 kW at 532’ HAAT.
