SPARTA-Robert “Bob” J. Sweeney, 88, of Sparta, passed away peacefully, at his home, on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. He was born on June 25, 1936 to Glen and Leona (Etheridge) Sweeney in the Township of Lafayette, WI.

Robert drove semi-truck for Green County Fast Freight, West End Beverage Sales, and Diamond Transportation. He went over a million miles without ever having a single accident.

Bob and Lela also raised horses on their hobby farm in New Windsor, IL. Later, they moved to Sparta, WI where he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Bob was an avid Green Bay Packers and wrestling fan. He also loved to fish, camp, and go boating.

Bob is survived by his wife, Lela; children, Sherry (Tim) Williams, Debra (Robert) Child, Jeffrey (Becky Schaller) Sweeney, Valerie (Robert) Border, and Phillip (Angella Pierce) Sweeney; 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Young and Doris Fox; and brother, Russell Sweeney.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lulu Bell; son, Jim Thompson; granddaughters, Angela Meinhardt and Tiffany Sweeney; his parents, and 4 siblings.

A funeral service with military honors was held on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home and Cremation, Sparta. Burial was in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Mineral Point, WI.
