Four-wheel drive enthusiasts from across Wisconsin gathered April 11 at the Cranberry Country Lodge in Tomah, filling the parking lot with modified rigs for the Wisconsin Coalition of 4-Wheel Drive's spring membership meeting.
The Wisconsin Coalition of 4-Wheel Drive brings together several affiliated clubs and more than 400 members statewide. The group promotes responsible off-road recreation on public and private lands, focusing on safety, education, trail conservation, and maintaining access for future use.
Driftless Offroad 4x4, a supporting club based in southwest Wisconsin, hosted the event. The meeting allowed members to hear updates on club activities, finances, and upcoming events, as well as discuss land access and plans for the coalition.
WC4WD collaborates with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), various state and local government agencies, and private landowners to promote responsible land use and trail conservation. The organization works with landowners in three locations in Wisconsin: Mole Lake, White Cap Mountain, and Quarry Meadows near Tomah. These partnerships provide clubs with spaces to enjoy the outdoors and their four-wheel drive vehicles.
The tour begins
Following the meeting, Driftless Offroad 4x4 organized a trail ride at Quarry Meadows, a privately owned property near Tomah that is relatively unknown outside the off-roading community.
Mike Kruse, trail coordinator for Quarry Meadows, collected fees and safety forms before outlining rules and route options for participants. More experienced drivers split off to explore advanced terrain, while Kruse led the remaining group.
Using the club's slogan — "If you can follow me, let's wheel" — Kruse guided a line of Jeeps, Broncos, a Suzuki Samurai, and a Rivian SUV along a muddy loop designed to showcase the property and the club's ongoing work.
Building the trails
Spanning roughly 200 acres, Quarry Meadows has been developed over time through volunteer efforts. Club members regularly organize trail-building days to clear brush and downed trees, creating routes that wind through the area's hilly terrain.
Trail options range from beginner-friendly paths to more technical sections. One rock crawling section requires large tires, a suspension lift, and an uncanny interest in breaking parts and causing vehicle damage. One driver broke a drive shaft attempting to climb a wet, rock-covered hill.
The property includes a staging area for vehicles and a primitive camping space for members during events. Strict rules govern its use, including prohibitions on alcohol and drug use. A full list of rules and required waivers is available through the organization.
Because Quarry Meadows is privately owned, access is limited to WC4WD members and affiliated club events. Unauthorized entry is prohibited, and trespassers will be prosecuted. The landowners' identities are not shared to prevent unwanted contact or harassment.
A growing community
Driftless Offroad 4x4 was founded in 2023 by Morgan Hampe, who started the club after purchasing and modifying her Jeep and looking to connect with others who shared her interest in off-roading. The club welcomes full-size four-wheel-drive vehicles, but does not include ATVs or UTVs.
Kruse, now president of the La Crosse-based club, said he remains focused on maintaining and improving the Quarry Meadows property while helping expand opportunities for members.
The group hosts several events throughout the year, including Go Topless Day, Cranberry Crawl, and trail-building days. Go Topless Day serves as a fundraiser for Stepping Out in Pink, a breast cancer charity, while Cranberry Crawl coincides with Tomah's annual Cranfest celebration.
"We can always use help cleaning up after storms or moving brush and downed trees," Kruse said. "If you come, bring leather gloves, eye protection, and loppers. It would be helpful if you have certification in chainsaw use. All members are welcome — more hands make less work."
The club is also planning additional outings, including trips to Moab, Utah, and a future ride along the Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail, which stretches from Wisconsin's southern border to Lake Superior.
Kruse said organizers are exploring the possibility of hosting a veterans-focused event in the future, offering opportunities for participants to bring their own vehicles or ride along with other members.
As off-road recreation gains popularity in Wisconsin, organizations like the Wisconsin Coalition of 4-Wheel Drives and Driftless Offroad 4x4 are working to ensure that access, safety, and conservation remain central to the sport.
