VOLLEYBALL: New area coaches prepare teams for start of 2024 season

Posted

The tenure for first-year Sparta volleyball coach Mary Sackmann officially started with the onset of practices on Monday, August 19. Sackmann takes over for Ray Cruz, who guided the SHS program for the past two seasons.

Sparta, like most area programs, has been working on conditioning and skill work while coaches have been evaluating athletes to see which level of play best suits each of them.

Sparta hosts Tomah on Tuesday, August 27 in the MVC opener. The Spartans will then play at the Great River Sprawl in Onalaska the following two days. The tournament will also include Bangor and Brookwood.

The Timberwolves will be led by Kate Mathison this year. Mathison takes over as head coach for Bobbi Jo Ulrich, who moved on to take over the New Lisbon program.

With the onset of practices, Dave Waraxa started his time at Brookwood and Khris Kleba began his run at Cashton.

There are five head volleyball coaching changes in the Mississippi Valley Conference and four in the Scenic Bluffs.
