Mary Ellen Monroe (Lobe), age 78, of Tomah, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 19, 2025. A woman of incredible strength, boundless energy, and overflowing love, Mary lived her life to the fullest—always giving more than she ever asked for in return.

Born on June 16, 1947, in Tomah, Mary was the beloved daughter of Harold and Mary (Schaller) Lobe. She graduated from Tomah High School in 1965 and later went on to earn a degree in IT Web & Software Development from Western Wisconsin Technical College—proving that her thirst for learning never slowed down.

In 1971, Mary married her adoring husband, Ray Monroe. Together they built a beautiful life until his passing in 2009. Mary’s professional career was nothing short of inspiring—serving over 40 years at the Veterans Affairs Medical Hospital. From starting as a switchboard operator to rising through the ranks as an IT Director, she dedicated her career to serving veterans across the country. Mary also found joy in teaching as a computer science instructor at Western Wisconsin Technical College, a role she cherished deeply.

Mary was preceded in death by her loving parents, Harold and Mary Lobe; her dear husband, Ray Monroe; and her brother, Thomas Lobe.

She is survived by her devoted children: Jack (Tina) Todd, Ray (Jill) Monroe, and Joe (Niki) Monroe. She will be forever remembered by her beloved grandchildren: Michael, Anastasia, Rhett, Caden, Ryan, Madison, Avery, and Drew and her cherished great-grandchildren. Mary also leaves behind her sister and best friend, Luann Tautges, her brother Rick Lobe, and many treasured nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Mary’s dedication to her community was impressive. She proudly served as President of the Tomah Museum and spent 10 years on the Tomah Area School District Board of Education. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and her daily phone calls with Luann were a treasured part of her life. Mary was known for her love of her dogs, get-togethers with friends, her passion for home projects, and her deep love of music and dancing. She was also a fierce Green Bay Packers fan, known for her colorful—and often sharp—commentary on coaching decisions.

Above all else, Mary was a caretaker at heart. As the eldest sibling, she learned early to look after those around her, and that caring spirit guided her life. She worked hard, loved fiercely, and lived every moment with purpose.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah. Pastor Bob Streeter will officiate.  A private family burial will be held at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends are invited for a visitation from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home on Wednesday.  A Celebration of Life for Mary will be held following the service on Wednesday beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Taphouse Twenty, 201 Helen Walton St. Suite 1, Tomah, WI 54660.

In honor of Mary’s lifelong commitment to community, memorial donations may be made to the Tomah Museum at tomahmuseum@charter.net or by calling 608-372-1880.
