Yesterday the heat was unsufferable, reaching over 100 degrees in the shade in many localities. Today is just as bad, if not worse, and the sun seems to burn like a furnace. To keep cool is the chief end of man these burning days.

While working on a pole in the alley, back of Dr. H.H. Williams’ residence on East Oak Street, Fred Middleman, lineman for the Monroe County Telephone Company, came in contact with a live wire. This caused him to release his hold, and he fell to the ground, breaking his leg.

Spartans will be able to attend one of the best theaters in western Wisconsin when they go to the Classic after Mr. Burkitt completes an extensive improvement project which is expected to get underway shortly. Furniture and fixtures will receive the major portion of the attention in the new project. (Opened around 1920 as the Bell Theatre, in 1927 the name was changed to the Classic Theatre. The Classic Theatre is listed in the 1957 Film Daily Yearbook with 480 seats. The building still stands and is currently used as a Tattoo studio.)

Lost or exchanged by error – I have a black Chesterfield coat that is too small and does not belong to me. It’s about size 16 and probably got it in exchange for my own, which I cannot find. Open house activities for the newly remodeled quarters of the Monroe County Bank are scheduled for Saturday. Two years of planning and a year of actual construction mark the major construction job in Sparta’s business district.

Alfred Brueggman, Rt. 3, bagged a rattlesnake five feet long with his lawnmower Thursday afternoon.

Liability insurance premiums for cities like Sparta have skyrocketed this year. Sparta will be paying $33,298 for liability coverage this year. That compares to $8,549 for 1985, an increase of over 400 percent.

Tee Pee Supper Club in Tomah has accepted an offer from Gerke & Sons on the property, and tentative plans are to bulldoze the buildings and put a new structure in its place. (At the time, Mike Murray was a Tomah Alderman, later Mayor. He would build a new business on the site, “Murray’s on Main.”)
A new exhibit at the Monroe County History Room shows visitors what it was like to live in the city of Sparta in the 1950s with a nine-room dollhouse. The dollhouse was donated by Penny Tock of Sparta and was built for her by her stepfather in 1992.
