SPARTA - There are those among us who leave this world a bit brighter simply by being a part of it. Linda Erickson was one of them. Through her quiet faith, gentle spirit, and unwavering devotion to her family, she filled our ordinary days with extraordinary warmth, kindness, and love.
Linda Erickson, 78, of Sparta, Wisconsin, was welcomed into the presence of the Lord peacefully at her home on Friday, July 31, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on July 5, 1948, in Sparta, beloved daughter of Bill and Ardell “Berry” Thurston. She grew up in Sparta and graduated from Sparta High School. On September 9, 1967, she married her soulmate, Eldred “Eldie” Erickson, and together they built a beautiful life, raising three children—Brian, Wendy, and Mark—in the community they proudly called home.
Family was her greatest joy and treasure. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose love and kindness knew no limit. She would always say that her granddaughters and great-granddaughters were among her greatest blessings, and she treasured every moment spent with them. She loved her family fiercely and unconditionally, and they, in turn, knew that they could always turn to her for a warm embrace, gentle encouragement, and steadfast support. She was a constant presence at every track meet, recital, birthday, and graduation. She was the center of every family gathering. She was our strength.
For many years, she worked in the cafeteria at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Sparta, where she became widely known for her warm smile, genuine kindness, and caring spirit. She had a special way of making everyone feel welcome, whether lifelong friends or strangers meeting her for the first time. She was a woman of deep and unwavering faith, and a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sparta. Her quiet faith guided the way that she lived each day—with humility, compassion, gratitude, and a love for others.
She had gratitude for the simplest blessings. A beautiful sunny day, a walk through her flower gardens, birds gathered at her feeders, and time spent with those she loved were all that she needed to be content. Yellow, her favorite color, symbolized the warmth and sunlight that she brought into all our lives. She found joy and beauty in every season of life and openly reminded us that, “All is well in Farmers Valley,” a phrase that always brought us comfort and a smile. During the hardest times, she would gently reassure us by saying, “This too shall pass.” Those simple words reflected the quiet strength, hope, and optimism that defined her life. Even through her diagnosis of cancer and the fierce and courageous
battle that followed, she would never let her spirit dim, never ask why. She would only grace us with her beautiful smile and remind us to be thankful for each day. She was our lighthouse.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Ardell “Berry” Thurston; her brothers, Thomas Thurston and Jeff Thurston; her brother-in-law, Ron Sanders; and her beloved nephew, Rob Culpitt.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, Eldred “Eldie” Erickson; her children, Brian (Stacy) Erickson, Wendy Swanson (Mike Rams), and Mark (Tara) Erickson; her cherished granddaughters, Heather, Ashley, Haley, Hillary, Serena, Leah, Rachael, Jillian, and Abby; her precious great granddaughters, Tempe and Raelynn; her sisters, Kathy Sanders, Joanne Crocker, and Tari (Chad) Skinner; her sisters-in-law, Mary Thurston, Marsha Thurston, and Barbara Mahan; and countless nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends whose lives were richly blessed by her love.
Linda’s greatest legacy will not be found in the years that she lived, but in the love and devotion that she gave so freely. She taught us all that life’s greatest treasures are these … faith, kindness, family, and gratitude. Her gentle heart, unbreakable spirit, and selfless devotion to those she loved will continue to live on in every flower that graces her garden, every bird that visits her feeders, every sunny day that warms our hearts, and every gathering of her beloved family. Though we miss her deeply, those of us who loved her will forever carry her memory in our hearts, taking comfort in the knowledge that, through her faith, her soul is at peace.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation at the funeral home on Friday, August 7, 2026, from 4pm to 7pm. Memorial services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sparta on Saturday, August 8, 2026 at 11am, with a luncheon to follow at the American Legion Post.
