Laura E. Hubert, 90, of Tomah, peacefully passed away on Sunday May 4, 2025. Laura was born on October 13, 1934, to Ben and Irma Harmsen in Marquette County. Laura grew up in Kenosha, WI.  She married Gilbert Pahl in 1955. They had 3 children, Bruce, Debra and David. When their marriage ended, Laura was content in raising her 3 children in Kenosha, but fate had something else in mind! Laura’s neighbor, Ceil (formerly Cecilia Hubert of Tomah), introduced Laura to John Hubert, Ceil’s brother from Madison. After their first “blind date” at Nino’s Steak House in Kenosha, sparks flew, and that date changed the course of everything!

John and Laura were married on June 1, 1970. They lived in Madison for many years, until building their retirement home in Tomah, John’s hometown. Laura and John lived a wonderful life, with so many friends! They traveled often throughout the US, visiting many family members and friends. They were always on the go! Later in life, both John and Laura “drove for the Amish”, and remained friends with many of them. Laura was a great cook and welcomed all into their home. She had a feisty, outspoken manner, with a heart-of-gold. Their home was a place that was always welcome to anyone looking for a card game, or something to eat or drink, and visit on the porch!

When John passed away in 2013, Laura lost the love of her life. She stayed busy with volunteer work and was a devoted and faithful member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. You could often see Laura working the Friday night fish fries at the American Legion Post #201, of which she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary.

As life began to slow down, Laura could often be seen around Tomah with her “Bobbsey Twin”, Helen Knutson. Some of their favorite haunts were Culver’s and the Community Dinner on Monday nights. Helen and Laura were the best of friends, and our family is forever grateful for this close friendship.

Laura is survived by her 3 children: Bruce (Debbie) Pahl, Deb Kohl, and David (Amy) Pahl, along with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is further survived by John’s children; Mary (Mel) Schroeder, Lynn Adrian, Mike (Debbie) Hubert, and Pat (the late Dewey) Wagner, and his grandchildren and great grandchildren. John and Laura were blessed with a wonderful family! No one could have foreseen that a blind date at Nino’s could have culminated with such a fulfilling and beautiful life! We know that they are together again, playing cards and laughing with all their many friends and family that preceded them! Indeed, what a wonderful life!

Our family wants to thank Close to Home of Tomah for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Mom. Although she was there for just a short time, she truly loved you all! In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Close to Home, or any local Hospice organization.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2:00 PM, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 310 W. Elizabeth Street, Tomah.  Pastor David Dahl will officiate.  Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited for a time of visitation on Saturday at the church from 1:00 PM until the time of the service.
