Late Surge Helps Sparta Secure Second-Straight Win

Sparta scored six runs in the final two innings of Tuesday's Mississippi Valley Conference contest, winning 10-8 at La Crosse Logan.

Tuesday's win was the first league win for the Spartans since last year and the second-straight win for coach Erik Jones and company after defeating Wisconsin Dells 15-3 (5) on Monday, April 20.

The visiting Spartans held a 3-0 advantage after the top of the third in Tuesday's game at Logan, but surrendered a quartet of runs in the bottom of the frame. Each team scored a single run in the fourth, but the home team used two singles and a double to go up 7-4 in the fifth.  

Sparta closed the gap in the sixth. Annika Kirchoff reached base after being hit by a pitch. Ali Solberg singled to move Kirchoff to third before coming home on a single by Emma Selbrede. Kaydence Erickson helped drive in Selbrede with a hit of her own that narrowed the gap to 7-6. 

Logan went up 8-6 in the bottom of the sixth. 

Sparta's final rally after loaded the bases with three-straight walks and just one out. The bottom of the Spartans' order came through again as Solberg and Selbrede singled and combined for two RBI that tied the game. Erickson followed suit and pushed the go-ahead run across the plate. Solberg scored the 10th and final run after stealing home on a wild pitch.

Sparta's defense forced a double play and a pop out to finish the game.

Solberg finished with three hits, an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Izzy Mickelson joined the leadoff hitter, Erickson and ninth spot hitter Selbrede with two hits each.

Kirchoff  was credited with the win after pitching a full seven innings. The senior struck out three, walked one and allowed eight runs on 12 hits.
