TOMAH- Jerome “Jerry” C. Steele, age 71, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 6, 2025, at Mayo Clinic Healthcare in La Crosse, WI. He was born March 8, 1953, to Robert and Arlys (Johnson) Steele.
Born and raised in Tomah, Jerry was a graduate of Tomah High School in 1971, where he developed lifelong friendships and began his deep commitment to serving his community. His sense of civic duty and dedication to others was evident in every aspect of his life.
For most of his life, Jerry served as a volunteer firefighter with the Tomah Fire Department where he made a mark in various roles through the years, including Assistant Fire Chief and most recently, Fire Inspector. His bravery and selflessness were evident in his tireless commitment to protecting others. His courage was not only seen in his work as a firefighter, but also in his early years as an EMT with Tomah Area Ambulance Service.Jerry attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse prior to his admission to Milwaukee Area Technical College where he obtained a degree in Funeral Service. He owned and operated the Ninneman-Steele Funeral Home, a trusted establishment in the Tomah community where he provided comfort and care to many families during their times of greatest need.
An adventurous soul, Jerry found solace in the great outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, sharing his passion with his children, grandchildren, family and friends. Each November, Jerry eagerly anticipated deer camp at the Tree Farm where tall tales would be told. He enjoyed many hunting trips out west as well.
Jerry’s other passion was Flora Dell, a place that shaped his childhood and eventually became his home. On many days, Jerry could be found sitting outdoors in his rocking chair, sipping a Sun Drop, befriending the wildlife or warming himself by the fire. But it was his role in the annual 4th of July picnic that truly showcased his spirit. Jerry took great pride in organizing a spectacular fireworks show that lit up the skies. His time at Flora Dell, surrounded by nature, became the backdrop to passing down tradition and creating memories that will live on in the hearts of his family.
Above all, Jerry’s pride and joy were his grandchildren. He loved following all their sporting events and celebrating in their accomplishments. He was so proud of them.
