SPARTA - James “JJ” J. Ewers, 84, of Sparta, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Serenity House in Tomah. He was born on November 17, 1941, in Edgerton, Wisconsin, to Uline Hove and Zada Ewers. He grew up in Sparta and graduated from Sparta High School.

JJ served in the US Navy from 1959 until his honorable discharge in 1963. He attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison Law School and was sworn in on January 17, 1968. He practiced law in Madison for 24 years.

JJ enjoyed traveling, gardening, and creating lawn sculptures. He had a passion for riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and made many memorable trips to Sturgis.

JJ is survived by his brother, Richard Ewers of Sparta; sister, Zada Waller of Winona, MN; nieces, Tammy (Ewers) Eveland of Racine, WI and Laura (Ewers) Greeno of Sparta; and nephew, Timothy (Eva) Ewers of Sparta.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Zella and Cabby Ewers; parents, Zada (Ewers) Cole and Uline Hove; and brother, David Ewers.
