Finding a place to remember friends – that was the goal of the New Lisbon Girl Scout Troop #8576. And this hard-working group of young ladies did just that. The entire troop welcomed the task of raising funds for memorials honoring Skyla Sorenson and Alexandria Taylor, who were tragically killed in 2024. Led by Troop leaders, including Myelle Dubosq, the Troop sought support from the local Lions Club of New Lisbon, who donated $600 toward the project. The troop and their family members donated $650, and the rest was raised through a plant sale and pizza dinner hosted by the Opera House Bar & Grill in New Lisbon. All the donations covered the cost of a memorial for Alex in New Lisbon, and the cost of a memorial bench here in Sparta. Located on the west side of the Sparta Free Library, “It is the perfect spot for family and friends of Skyla to come and sit, bask in the sunshine and enjoy the crabapple blossoms in the spring,” says Library Director Michelle Tryggestad. “We applaud these young ladies and their adult volunteers for their very meaningful donation. It will be a lovely place to reflect, remember and enjoy for years to come. The official Girl Scouts of the USA mission statement is ‘To build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.’ Troop #8576 have made our little corner of the world a better place by honoring their friend.”
