We celebrate the life of a devoted husband, father, and proud son of Italian immigrants whose legacy lives on in the countless ways he gave, taught, and loved.

Gene Ronald Paterra, affectionately known as Ron, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the age of 87 in Tomah, Wisconsin. Born on July 3, 1937, in Monessen, Pennsylvania.

He met the love of his life at a high school dance, a spark that would lead to a lifelong partnership built on shared laughter, devotion, and plenty of home-cooked meals – always prepared under the watchful eye of his well-meaning kitchen supervision.

Together, they raised four children, all of whom earned college degrees thanks to his tireless work ethic and support. He quietly championed their journeys, even those who struggled to find their degree or university.

A man of great determination, he earned a master’s degree while working full-time, setting an example of perseverance and dedication. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures: biking, watching sports, a fine cigar, and especially the familiar warmth of his wife’s cooking. His musical interests stayed with him beyond his high school marching band days. Ron enjoyed listening to the likes of Louis Prima, Jerry Lee Lewis, Dean Martin, and the Gaylords.

Ron was quick to answer the phone, but even quicker to pass it off to his wife. However, he always lingered nearby, whispering questions and keeping tabs in the background, just like he did in life: always present, always engaged.

He had a deep affection for all things Italian, regardless of their pedigree, and found true contentment living by the lake, watching the birds, the seasons change, and the quiet persistence of winter’s ice fishermen.

He leaves behind a legacy of humor, resilience, and unwavering love – a life well-lived, and deeply cherished.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Arlene (nee Richie), his children; Rhonda Jean Paterra, Victor Guy Paterra, and Raymond Mark (Dana) Paterra, grandchildren; Maxim (Madison), Victoria, Anthony, Olivia, and Nico Paterra; and his brother, David Paterra.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Anna (nee Chiaverini) Paterra; his son, Vincent Ronald Paterra; and his brother, Arthur “Buzzy” Paterra.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church, 303 W. Monroe St., Tomah. Father Ethan Hokamp will officiate.
