On Saturday, November 16th, volunteers started setting up Kriskindlmarkt, in downtown Sparta. Among those lending a hand were members of the Sparta Junior Garden Club, who assisted in decorating the walkways by the Beaver Creek-side garden. At a recent Sparta Junior Garden Club event, in preparation for the candy-cane placing, members learned how to use Zip ties and how to cut the ties properly and safely when finished. They also learned how to perfectly prop up and angle the candy canes, so the hook would not incumber people using the walkways near the creek.
The garden by Bever Creek has been maintained by the club throughout the year, but on that Saturday, club members were adorning the walkways with large colorful candy canes, in the traditional red and white format. Sylvia Goede and Nancy Fischer, the adult mentors of the club, assisted the girls.
They capped the afternoon by having hot chocolate, at a nearby coffee shop. “Some of the girls never had a hot or cold cappuccino before,” said Mark Mueller, President of the Sparta Garden Club. “What a delight it was to share in their laughter and happiness. The moment of volunteering was well worth the time spent with the Youth's Garden Club.”
Kriskindlmarkt is beginning to look a lot like Christmas in downtown Sparta, thanks to all the volunteers. More holiday excitement is right around the corner. Sparta will be hosting their Holiday Parade on Friday, December 6th, starting at 6 p.m. and winding down to Evans-Bosshard Park, for the lighting of the Holiday lights, which number over 500,000 lights.
