Frances M. Pollard, affectionately known as Fran to her friends and family, passed away at the age of 89 on April 21, 2025, at Touch of Home in Tomah, Wisconsin. Born on December 14, 1935, in Mississippi, Fran was the youngest of eight, and only daughter of Lonnie and Vera (Gibson) Mitchell. Fran grew up on the family farm in Stewart, Mississippi, where she learned the values of hard work and community.
It was in Memphis, Tennessee, where she met the love of her life, Robert Pollard, while he was stationed in the Navy. The couple married on November 22, 1958, and their union was blessed with love, laughter, and two daughters, Frances and Annie.
Fran was deeply devoted to her community, as demonstrated by her decades of involvement in civic organizations such as The Boys and Girls Club, Rotary International, Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP – La Crosse), Jaycettes, and others. Fran was a founding member of the Tomah ABWA, now Tomah Area Professional Women. She earned a lifetime achievement award for her years of service with the Tomah Chamber of Commerce. After serving on the Tomah City Council, Fran made history as Tomah’s first female Mayor.
Not only was Fran a community-driven leader, but she was also a woman of many interests. A master shopper, she had an eye for trends and a flair for fashion that made her stand out. Her childhood talent as a clarinet player, which earned her a 2 year college scholarship, was matched only by her determination and drive. Fran was both firm and loving, setting an example for her daughters and paving the way for them to learn valuable life lessons from a young age. Her influence ensured that they grew up to be successful and resilient.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Bob; daughters, Frances (Brett) Holzschuh and Annie Pollard-Rohde; grandson, Dane Holzschuh; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her seven brothers.
