The Deke Slayton Memorial Space & Bicycle Museum will be hosting several events to celebrate Deke Slayton’s space flight throughout the month of July. All events are free, donations appreciated, and held at the museum unless noted.
- Tuesday, July 15: Rocket Day, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., create and launch three different rockets—air rocket, straw rocket, Alka Seltzer rocket.
- Thursday, July 17: Hands Around the Museum Challenge, 2:00 p.m. group picture with the Deke Slayton statue, 2:15 p.m. surround the museum building holding hands, a drone will take pictures
- Saturday, July 19: ASTP 50th Anniversary Round Table, 1:00 p.m. at Sparta High School, 506 N Black River St; guests include Kent Slayton (Deke Slayton’s son), Bill Moon (NASA flight controller for Apollo, Skylab, ASTP, and Shuttle) and Jeff Williams (astronaut from Winter, Wisconsin who flew on four space shuttle missions and spent over 500 days on the International Space Station). A short video will be presented about ASTP, panel discussion, audience questions, and autographs; copies of Jeff’s book “The Work of His Hands, Apollo-Soyuz Test Project NASA Mission Reports, and Deke!” will be available to purchase.
- Sunday, July 20: Sharing Space with Deke featuring ASTP Kids, 3:00 p.m., we will be talking via Zoom with the children of the American crew members; Kent Slayton, son of Deke Slayton, Dionne and Karin Stafford, daughters of Tom Stafford, and Stephanie Brand, daughter of Vance Brand. You can attend at the museum or via Zoom, tickets are $10 and can be purchased through our website dekeslaytonmuseum.org.
