At approximately 2:57 p.m. on August 22, 2026, the Monroe County Communications Center received a report of found property along the riverbank near the walking trail in Memorial Park in Tomah. The property contained personal belongings, but the owner was not located in the immediate area.
Tomah Officers began contacting family members and known associates of the owner while searching the surrounding area and riverbank. During the search, officers located a deceased adult female in the water. Officers entered the water and confirmed the female was deceased.
The Tomah Fire Department was requested to assist with the recovery of the female. Firefighters entered the water and removed her from the river. Officers were then able to positively identify the deceased as the owner of the found property.
The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene and assisted with the investigation and transportation of the deceased. An autopsy was conducted on August 25, 2026. No signs of trauma causing death were observed during the autopsy. The investigation is awaiting the results of toxicology testing to assist in determining the cause and manner of death.
The investigation remains ongoing. At this time, there is no known threat to the public, and the incident is believed to be isolated in nature.
The identity of the female is being held pending proper notification of family.
