Posted

The Big Creek Valley Church Historical Society will host its annual fundraiser on Sunday, Aug. 2, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the historic church, 5188 County Hwy BC, Sparta.

This year's family-friendly event will continue the celebration of America's 250th birthday with a patriotic red, white, and blue theme. Visitors can enjoy food, live music, historical programs, exhibits, and activities while supporting the preservation of the historic church.

Food will be served beginning at 11 a.m. until sold out. A pulled pork sandwich plate with potato salad, beans, pickle, and beverage is $15. Amish fried pies served with Cedar Crest ice cream are $5.

Live music by Band of Friends will be featured from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and hay wagon rides will be offered from noon to 2 p.m.

Special exhibits include vintage flower vases from local Big Creek residents displayed inside the church. Additional flower vases will be available in the shed, where visitors making a donation may choose a keepsake vase to take home.

Historian Alex Manzella will present programs on the Civil War at noon and on Abraham Lincoln's role during the Civil War at 2 p.m. Guests may also take a self-guided walk through Big Creek Union Cemetery, featuring the graves of three Spanish-American War veterans and seven Civil War veterans.

Fundraiser proceeds will help pay for needed maintenance, including painting the church roof and trim, improvements to the water house, and a new American flag and flagpole. The organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and tax-deductible donations are welcome.
