GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Bangor, Cashton advance to regional finals

The Bangor and Cashton girls’ basketball teams will each vie for a regional title and the sectional spots that come with it after winning their home regional semifinal contests to kick off the weekend on Friday, February 23.

In Division 4, the third-seeded Cardinals (21-4) bulldozed their way to a 76-43 win over No. 6 seed Melrose-Mindoro (14-12) in Bangor. Junior guards Anna Fronk and Aubrey Langrehr led the charge for Bangor in the blowout win with 23 and 17 points, respectively.

No. 4 seed Cashton (20-6) outslugged No. 5 seed Kickapoo (18-8) for a 37-26 victory in their defensive-minded Division 5 reginal semifinal matchup in Cashton. The Eagles were led on the night by senior guard Sydney Helgerson with 11 points, making her the only player on either team to hit double digits scoring.

Elsewhere in Division 5, top-seeded Cochrane-Fountain City (23-1) blew past No. 8 seed Brookwood (14-12) 77-25 in Fountain City. Senior guard Vanessa Anderson set the pace for the Falcons with 10 points.

In an all-MVC matchup in Division 2, No. 2 seed Onalaska (17-7) defended home court by rolling past No. 7 seed Sparta (9-17) 79-54. The Spartans were guided by sophomore Elexa Jones with 19 points and fellow sophomore Lily Seifert with 10 points.

Both Bangor and Cashton hit the road for regional final action on Saturday, February 24. The Cardinals play at No. 2 seed Westfield (22-3) while the Eagles square off against No. 1 seed Cochrane-Fountain City. Both games are slated to begin at 7 p.m.
