SUMMER ROUNDUP: Crenshaw, Bjorkman capture gold at national events

Bangor's Sam Crenshaw added yet another accomplishment to his decorated track and field career by winning the pole vault in the men's 17-18 division at the 2024 USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships, held from July 22 to 28 at Texas A&M's E.B. Cushing Stadium in College Station, Texas.

Crenshaw came away with the national title by clearing the bar at 15 feet, 11 inches during the pole vault competition on July 27. Crenshaw, a two-time Division 3 pole vault state champion during his high school track career, is going on to compete at Western Kentucky in college.

Sparta's Bjorkman brings home gold at national championships

On the heels of her sophomore year of high school, Sparta's Gabby Bjorkman made a splash on the national stage by capturing a gold and silver medal at the 2024 AAU National Gymnastics Championships, which took place from June 20 to 23 at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Bjorkman was the open optional gold medalist in the bars, floor and all-around, and the silver medalist in the vault and beam. Bjorkman will head into her junior season having already qualified for state in each of the first two years of her high school gymnastics career.

Tomah 16U Legion baseball wins state title

The Tomah Post 201 16-and-under Legion baseball team finished their summer on the highest of highs: by winning the state championship.

Tomah took home the top prize at the 2024 Wisconsin 16U American Legion State Baseball Tournament, held from July 26 to 30 in Baraboo. Tomah's path to a state title featured a 7-6 win over La Crosse, a 4-3 win over Baraboo, an 11-3 win over Loyal, a 6-5 loss to St. Mary's Springs and a final 4-0 win over Loyal.

Nathan Hendrick was the tournament MVP, Owen Laudon won the batting title, and the trio of Quinn Gerke, Owen Wang and Brennen Mack joined them on the all-tournament team.

Sparta Legion softball ends season at state

The Sparta Post 100 Legion softball team ended their season as state for a second consecutive year, picking up a win along the way. The 2024 Wisconsin American Legion Division 1 State Softball Tournament took place from August 2 to 4 in DeForest.

On the opening day of play, Sparta scratched out a 5-4 win against Augusta. The following day, Sparta lost 23-4 to Wausau and 15-4 to West Salem, knocking them out in the double-elimination format.

Norwalk Knights reach state tournament

The Norwalk Knights ended their season at the state tournament but were unable to extend their stay past one game. The Knights took part in Division B of the 2024 Wisconsin Baseball Association (WBA) State Tournament, which was held on August 17 and 18 in Whittlesey.

In an eight-team, single-elimination bracket, Norwalk fell in the quarterfinals with a 5-2 loss to the Osceola Braves. Osceola would go on to win the Division B state championship.

Horstman, Butzler participate in Legion All-Star Game

Bangor alum Chase Horstman and Cashton alum Connor Butzler got to share the field together as teammates at the 2024 Wisconsin American Legion Baseball State All-Star Game, which was held August 11 at American Family Field in Milwaukee following that day's game between the Brewers and the Cincinnati Reds.

Horstman (Bangor) and Butzler (Westby/Coon Valley Bandits) were members of the Team Stripes roster, joined by the likes of Tyler Quackenbush (Viroqua 138ers), Chris Calico (West Salem Post 51) and Owen Treanor (Onalaska Post 336). The roster for Team Stars included Holmen Post 284's Calvin Gilbertson and Jack Walter. Horstman got the win on the mound and Butzler recorded an RBI in the win for Team Stripes.
