Tomah runners shine at home invitational

Posted

The Tomah cross country teams played host Tuesday, October 5 when they held their annual invite at Hiawatha Golf Course on the north end of town. Only three schools participated with Tomah — Necedah, New Lisbon and Reedsburg — as a couple of others dropped out for various reasons.

The small meet was ran in one giant loop around the front nine at the golf course. Runners were treated to a unique feature — the Tomah pep band — as they opened the race and while they passed the area around the finish line throughout the race.

The Tomah girls had an impressive meet with five girls finishing in the top six. Aisha Hughart-Topygal took the top spot in the meet with a time of 23:12.4. Hughart-Topygal held off Reedsburg’s Payton Cummingham, who closed in during the final 800 meters to finish just four seconds later.

Madeleine Kline came in at third for Tomah with a time of 23:38.1. Josie Bailey was close behind Kine in fourth with a time of 23:56.3. Kaylee Miller was not far behind as she finished in fifth place with a time of 24:18.1 to round out the scoring runners.

Lily Joyce finished in the sixth spot with a time of 25:04.4. Alyssa Alden came in behind Joyce to finish in seventh place. Avery Hagen was ninth and Lydia Boettcher came in right behind her in 10th.

Reedsburg and New Lisbon combined for just four other runners besides the Tomah group, allowing the Timberwolves to post a perfect score of 15 at Tuesday’s meet.

Tomah would have two boys finish first and second individually at the meet.

Ty Schanhofer placed first with a time of 18:29.9. His teammate, Carl Oskar-Wilcox, would come in second place with a time of 18:51.6.

The next Tomah runner to finish would be Logan Larson, who came in eighth with a time of 20:13.5. Closely behind him was Cash Lofgren in 12th place with a time of 21:02.9. Calvin Zeps would round out the top five Tomah finishers as he came in at 14th with a time of 21:29.1.

Tyler Hausman would come in at 17th. Nick Salzwedel came in at 19th and Chris Burbach followed behind at 20th.

Reedsburg won the boys' title with 31 points and Tomah was second with 37. Necedah’s Ethan David finished third and helped the Cardinals take third with 73 points.

Tomah will compete again on Saturday, October 9 at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
