Though this year’s spring weather hasn’t been favorable for the start of the 2022 high school boys’ tennis season in Wisconsin, the Tomah Timberwolves did manage to get their first dual under their belts — securing a decisive win in the process.

The Timberwolves won six of their seven matches — including a sweep of all four singles matches — to defeat Reedsburg 6-1 when the two teams clashed Monday, April 11 in Tomah.

In singles play, Tomah not only won all four matches, but didn’t drop a single set in the process.

Tomah junior Joe Venner swept Reedsburg senior Anthony Buss 6-3, 6-2 in No. 1 singles; junior Jonah Nick eked out a win in a hard-fought first set on his way to beating senior Joshua Thomas 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 in No. 2 singles; senior Anthony Lord won a tight match over senior Dayne Meinhardt 6-4, 6-4 in No. 3 singles; and junior Greg Klouda defeated senior Brogan Helmeid 6-3, 6-1 in No. 4 singles.

In No. 2 doubles, Tomah seniors Eric Erdman and Karson Hoag bested Reedsburg seniors Tyler Singletary and Zach Tourdot 6-2, 6-1. Senior Logan Boulton and junior Ethan Libbey topped senior Riley Cummings and freshman Giovani Rojas 6-1, 6-1 in No. 3 doubles.

Reedsburg’s lone win in the dual came in No. 1 doubles, where sophomores Jordan Matyas and Simon Wenninger defeated Tomah seniors Gavin Richer and Nick Schaitel 6-2, 6-2.

Weather permitting, the Timberwolves will next face La Crosse Aquinas — which was originally supposed to take place on April 12 — in their first conference dual Thursday, April 21 starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Green Island Tennis Courts in La Crosse.

That would be followed by a quad with McFarland, Oregon and host Madison East Saturday, April 23 starting at 9 a.m. in Madison.
