Back in the win column: Tomah strikers shut out West Salem

On Tuesday, September 14, the Tomah boys soccer team earned a 3-0 road win against West Salem.  

Tomah head coach Scott Conzemius said his team was able to come out and match West Salem’s intensity from the start. Scoring an early goal only helped to put pressure on the home team and build the confidence in the visitors.

Conzemius complimented his team on being able to move the ball, being patient and not settling for half-chances throughout both halves.

Gavin Richer lit up the scoreboard first with a goal in the fifth minute of the opening half. Haakon Gavin was credited with the assist.

The key goals came at the end of the first half and at the end of the second half when West Salem began to get into a rhythm. Eric Erdman scored on a penalty kick in the 36th minute of the game, which ultimately halted the momentum of West Salem. 

The final goal came from Jonah Nick and was assisted by Eric Erdman in the 72nd minute. This final goal effectively put the game out of reach for the home team, which had celebrated parents' night prior to the varsity contest. 

The goalkeeper for the Timberwolves had an impressive night with 5 saves vs 5 shots. West Salem goalkeeper Tyler Lehren had a busy night with 12 saves on 15 shots. 

The Timberwolves improve to 6-1 on the season and 4-1 in league play. The lone loss for Tomah came on September 7 at La Crosse Central.

Tomah’s next game will be against Onalaska  Thursday, September 16 in Tomah at 4:15 and the T-Wolves will hit the road Tuesday when they travel to Aquinas for the last MVC match of the season. 

Tomah will close the regular season with the MVC conference playoffs and three nonconference opponents: Wisconsin Rapids, Baraboo and Chippewa Falls.
