The Sparta volleyball team finished a busy three-day stretch of competition last week to start the 2021 fall season.

Less than 12 hours after the team’s season-opening win over La Crosse Logan, the Spartans were warming up to participate in the Great River Sprawl at the Omni Center in Onalaska.

Sparta opened the two-day event with a 2-1 win over Mineral Point. Kayla Fabry and Rylee Geier each landed 4 kills. Macey Oswald ended with 9 digs.

A 2-0 win over Onalaska’s varsity reserve team allowed Sparta to improve to 2-0.

However, the rest of the first day didn’t play out as Coach Katelyn Millis had hoped.

Sparta fell to Fall Creek - which qualified for state the past two seasons - 2-0, then lost to Webster 2-1 and Ladysmith 2-0. Oswald collected 10 digs against FC and 7 in the loss to Webster. Fabry had 5 kills to lead SHS against the Crickets and posted 6 kills against Ladysmith, while Josie Edwards had 5 kills and 3 blocks against Webster.

On Thursday, August 26, Sparta bounced back with a trio of wins to close out their time at the Great River Sprawl.

Fabry chalked up 8 digs and 7 kills in a 2-0 win over Iowa-Grant to open the day.

The junior then added 9 more kills, 5 aces and 5 digs in a 2-1 win over Green Bay Prebel. Abby Schell tallied 18 assists and Edwards led the team with 9 digs.

Anna Blaha powered the offense with 8 kills in a 2-0 win over Marawood Conference power, Stratford in the final match of the Great River Sprawl.

Fabry added 5 kills, while Oswald ended with 15 digs, Schell 11 assists in the win.

Sparta will travel to Tomah Tuesday night for its first meeting of the season between the two teams.
