Sparta girls' tennis sees season end at sub-sectionals

Playoff season has come and gone for the Sparta girls' tennis team. They competed in the sub-sectionals of the state tournament this past Monday.

The matches were held at the Green Island Tennis Courts in La Crosse. The team had four singles matches and three doubles matches only to see one win.

Sparta picked up its only win in singles. Mya Von Ruden, who was the eighth seed for her part of the bracket, defeated her first opponent, Onalaska’s Ganonou Her, 6-4, 7-5.

Von Ruden’s second opponent was the No. 1-seeded Delaney Gelder from Holmen. Gelder would go on to defeat Von Ruden 6-1, 6-1.

The other girls didn’t see much success. Sparta’s Claire Pribbernow kept her match close but fell short. Tomah’s Moriah Murray defeated Pribbernow 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Nadia Tover was defeated by Reedsburg’s Gabby Weis 6-2, 6-1. Isabella Roth was defeated by La Crosse Logan’s Tatyanna Roberts 6-4, 6-0.

The Sparta doubles teams were unable to secure a win in their three matches. One of the closer matches was with Sparta’s fifth-seeded Libby Oswald and Kira Markuson’s, who lost to the fourth-seeded Eryn Benson and Adrienne Crubel from Baraboo 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Sparta’s Harlee Phipps and Jill Roou were defeated by Portage’s Allison Kallungi and Molly Voigt 6-3, 6-3. Finally, Kate Gilbertson and Alana Clark were defeated by Tomah’s Emma Larson and Ella Haskamp 6-4, 6-4.

Middleton won the sectional Wednesdsay in Waunakee with 43 points. La Crosse Central was third with 23 and Holmen (20) fourth.
