Sparta boys' soccer fall to New Richmond, Wisconsin Rapids

Posted

It was quite a busy last week for the Sparta boys' soccer. The Spartans had a match Thursday, September 30 versus a difficult New Richmond squad. Then, just a couple of days later, the squad had a match against Wisconsin Rapids in Wisconsin Rapids. The team went 0-2 in those matches.

The New Richmond match was kept close for the first 30 minutes, as Sparta only gave up a single goal.

Then suddenly New Richmond kicked it into a different gear and the score before the halftime bell favored the Tigers 4-0. Sparta simply broke down defensively and New Richmond was able to take advantage of the situation. By the end of the match, Sparta had no answer against the New Richmond attack, losing 8-0.

Their next match was an away match versus Wisconsin Rapids. The Spartans had a better outing but again didn’t see much success.

Wisconsin Rapids was able to distribute the ball around the field and that troubled the Sparta defenders. The first-half score of this match was also 4-0, but the Sparta boys were able to ramp up their defense in the second half, only giving up one more goal. In the end, the Spartans left empty-handed with a 5-0 loss.

Sparta traveled to West Salem as Mississippi Valley Conference tournament play continued, but no results were available at the time of print.

The Spartans recieved a No. 8 seed for the WIAA postseason and will travel to face top-seeded New Richmond when regionals begin. MVC champion Onalaska was awarded the second seed in the Division 2 bracket, which also includes Tomah, Holmen, La Crosse Central and La Crosse Logan.
