The Sparta boys' soccer team took to the pitch this past Tuesday, October 12 in a conference match against the La Crosse Logan Rangers.

Within the first five minutes of the match, Sparta’s Adam Thompsom put the ball in the back of the net off a Matthew Zanon pass. Sparta went up 1-0 early, but just five minutes later Logan would tie the score back up. Sparta would net in three more goals and take the match 4-2 over its conference foe.

Just 10 minutes into the second half, Sparta was be handed a red card and would be down a man for the rest of the match.

The score was 1-1 going into the 60-minute mark. Then Sparta’s Diego Hernandez would send a 40-yard bomb over the Logan keeper to regain the lead for the Spartans.

Five minutes went by and a pass from Ivan Hurtado found the foot of Matthew Zanon for another Sparta goal for a 3-1 lead. With just eight minutes left in the contest, Conner Geeno assisted for Matthew Zanon’s second goal of the match.

“This was the best we played all season. We moved the ball well and were able to create great scoring opportunities," said Sparta head coach Zach Holcomb. "Landon Burkhardt was our goalie for the match and he performed very well. He made six big saves in the match."

After having their best performance of the year, the team hopes to continue their success when they welcome Arcadia to their home turf Thursday, October 14 before hitting the road next week for their WIAA regional contest at New Richmond.

Holmen 1, Tomah 0

The Tomah soccer team (8-3-3) was handed their third loss on the season in a close 1-0 match against the Homen Vikings (8-8-2) on Tuesday.

The Vikings took the lead early on in the first half and were able to hold off the Timberwolves the rest of the way.

The Timberwolves have lost 2 of their last 3 games.

“I’ll make sure we’ll have a better game come playoffs, but we have one more game to figure out how to get back on track,” Tomah head coach Scott Conzemius said about the game plan moving forward into the WIAA postseason.

The Timberwolves will be looking to get back in a rhythm Thursday, October 14 against Chippewa Falls.

Thursday’s game will be the regular-season finale for Conzemius and the T-Wolves. Tomah plays at La Crosse Central next Tuesday to open postseason play.
