SPARTA-Mary Jeanette Meier Slayton passed away on Monday, July 29, 2024, at the age of 94. She was born to Walter and Ethel (Thomas) Meier on August 15, 1929, in Bangor, WI. She was their only child.
Mary married Howard Slayton, of Leon, on November 27, 1948, and they farmed in the Leon Valley until they retired. Howard passed away in 2007.
Mary loved to garden and tend her flowers, watch birds through her scrupulously clean windows, play cards, stalk the albino deer with her friend, Herb, enjoy a root beer float at Rudy’s, win the final blackout game at bingo, and visit with family and friends.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Frederick) Nicolai of Glendale Heights, IL, and Beth Slayton of Leon; grandchildren, Adam Nicolai, Morgan Nicolai, Megan (Casie) Manke, and Katie (Jonathan) Fendt; great-grandchildren, Xander Howard Nicolai, Max Aiden Nicolai, Blaire Oliver Manke, Brysen Howard Manke, Lucas Robert Fendt, Howard Jonathan Fendt, and Gabriel Gilbert Fendt.
She will be truly missed.
A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 5, 2024 at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home and Cremation, Sparta, with Chaplain Priscilla Hemmersbach officiating.
Family and friends are invited for a visitation from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Monday, at the funeral home. Online condolences may be offered at www.schanhoferfh.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Deke Slayton Memorial Space and Bicycle Museum, or Trinity Lutheran Church in Sparta.
