Leon Country Floors shows its support for SACS

For several years now, the Leon Country Floors’ SACS team has made several substantial donations to Sparta Area Cancer Support (SACS) following its annual thrift sale. Last year, LCF owner Jeff Bohnert agreed to match the team’s earnings from the month-long thrift sale and together the total donation from the sale came to $12,909.50.

As a local business owner, Bohnert wanted to donate something to an organization that would keep the money in the community. Three years ago, LCF held a sale at the store with a portion of proceeds to be donated to SACS.

This year, the team led by Joanne Bohnert raised $6,426.64 and while last year, Jeff Bohnert matched the team’s fundraising efforts, this year he donated over $6,000 in advertising costs for the July thrift sale, SACS Walk/Rally in August and SACS huge rummage sale at The Zone. 

“People were just so generous,” Joanne said. 

This year’s thrift sale was held across the street from LCF every weekend throughout July. Leading up to the sale, the team worked hard to organize an abundance of donated items.

During the thrift sale, shoppers left monetary donations for SACS and the team also had a bake sale, which raised roughly $1,200.  

“We had so many wonderful bakers as well as SACS committee members who helped during the sale,” Joanne said. 

Each year, Joanne continues to receive items after the thrift sale is over that will go toward next year’s sale for SACs. She also keeps a donation bucket out to collect monetary donations.

“As long as it keeps making money for SACS, we’re going to keep doing it,” Joanne said. “It all adds up.”

SACS Co-President Gary Peterson said SACS is unique from other cancer support groups in that it does not have regular, corporate sponsors and it is so helpful when local businesses like LCF step up to show their support for the organization.

“It amazes me when I talk to someone who still doesn’t know what SACS does because we’re helping people right here in our own community,” Joanne said.
