KIWANIS STUDENT OF THE MONTH – SEPTEMBER

Posted

Sparta High School Senior, Henry Jerome, knew at age 16 what he wanted to do after graduation. Now, chosen as the September 2022 Kiwanis Student of the Month, Jerome is clearly on the right track.

Jerome’s nominating teacher, Steve Schauf, said that as a Sparta High School Junior, Jerome completed Schauf’s  Western Technical College’s (WTC) Advanced Machining Engineering and CNC Program and is currently enrolled in Joseph Hanratty’s WTC Welding Program. Schauf said that Jerome “Continues to develop, display and share his technical skills  and proficiency with underclassmen.” Jerome also served as a teaching assistant in Schauf’s “Introduction to Technology and Machining I Courses.” Schauf praised Jerome’s outstanding character and said, “His work ethic is second to none.”

Jerome’s educational history made him an easy pick for the U. S. Navy Recruiter, and in June Jerome said he will “ship off” to Great Lakes Naval Base in Chicago, for Basic Training. In the meantime, he attends monthly preparatory meetings with Navy Recruiter, Dakota Drinkman, in Onalaska. He hopes to eventually join the Seabees (United States Construction Battalion), a pool of skilled laborers, developed out of necessity, at the beginning of World War II. Long range, he wants to be an underwater-welder/fabricator and, in preparation, has earned certification as a diver.

Jerome works part-time at Mathews Archery, assists with the Macpherson National Archery and School Program (MASP), volunteers with landscaping restoration at Cataract Sportsman Club, yet still finds times to go fishing.
Jerome’s parents, Khristina and Rich Jerome, describe their son as kind and considerate and eager to help others. “His strongest trait is his ability to work with others,” said his mother; that includes his younger brother, 14-year-old Billy.

The Sparta Kiwanis Club has weekly programs at its Tuesday Noon Lunches. For more information contact Membership Chair, Doug Dengel, at 608-633-6092.
