SPARTA - Helen D. Meyer, 101, of Sparta, died Thursday, January 6, 2022, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. She was born December 10, 1920, in Monroe County, to Paul and Orpha (Smothers) Christenson.She went to Fletcher grade school and graduated from Sparta High School in 1937. She also went to Sparta Business College.

   Helen married Cecil Meyer, February 16, 1942, at St. John’s Lutheran parsonage, with Pastor Arthur Berg officiating. She was baptized and confirmed March 28,1943.

   She worked for the Government Land Acquisition Office, which purchased area farms, to enlarge Camp McCoy. That office was above Sparta Business College, before it became Ray’s Grocery Store.

   In 1944, they moved to a farm in East Beaver Creek valley. They were blessed with 6 children; 3 boys, and 3 girls.

   She also worked some at Equity Rolling Hills and Ted and Fred’s Grocery. She was a 4-H leader, homemaker member for 50 plus years, Farm Bureau Ladies Aid, Morrow Home Auxiliary Senior Citizens, AARP, and Bible Study.

   Helen enjoyed her family, cards, camping, traveling, dancing, sewing, and crocheting. She volunteered many years for the Bloodmobile, Morrow Home Auxiliary, Rolling Hills, and Church.

   Her traveling included most of the states, including Hawaii and Alaska, as well as a European tour and touring parts of Canada.

   Helen is survived by her children, David (Celia) Meyer of Sparta, Ronald (Katherine) Meyer of Tomah, WI, Susan (Wendell) Williams of Mauston, WI, Sandra (David) Lehmann of Hokah, MN, Darrell (Kathleen) Meyer of Plano, IL; grandchildren, Mary (Gary) Miller of Sparta, Paul (Tricia) Meyer of Sparta, Chad (Lindsey) Meyer of Friendship, Kari (Dale) Damsteegt of Atlantic Mine, MI, Lee (Kelsey) Meyer of Earlville, IL, Kerin (Ron) Skarg of Yorkville, IL, Jennifer (Joseph) Rieder of Brownsville, MN, John (Angela) Lehmann of La Crescent, MN, Gordon (Lena) Lehmann of La Crescent, MN, Alan Lehmann of La Crescent, MN, Sarah (Jim) Bills of New Lisbon, WI, and Alicia (Trevor) Butler of Aurora, IL; 23 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

   She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cecil in 1999; daughter, Judy in 1960; great granddaughter, Margo Shay in 1989; brothers, George and his wife, Lucile and Douglas and his wife, Sylvia Christenson; sister-in-law, Helen Meyer; brothers-in-law, Vernon and Elaine Meyer, Kenneth and Doris Meyer, Arlin Meyer and Vera, Violet, and and Dottie Meyer.

   The family would like to thank the staff at Morrow Memorial Home for their wonderful care they gave Helen in her final years.

   A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at St. John’s Ev Lutheran Church, Sparta, with Reverend Jon Hackbarth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
