SPARTA - Elaine H. Matson, 80, of Sparta, passed away Monday, October 3, 2022 at Rolling Hills Rehabilitation Center in Sparta. She was born on January 30, 1942 to Gilbert and Ruth (Swanson) Smith in Brooklyn, NY. At the age of 5 or 6, she moved to Long Island. Elaine graduated from Patchhogue-Medford High School in 1959.
Elaine married Roger Matson Sr. on November 12, 1960 in Sparta, WI. She was a devoted mother, wife, and Nana.
Elaine enjoyed crafting and collecting carousel horses. She was an avid packer fan, and loved gardening. Her grandchildren were everything to her. She was well known for her Christmas Eve Lasagna.
Elaine is survived by her daughters, Dawn (Don) Bindrim of Long Island, NY, and Joanne Matson of Sparta; grandchildren, Connor and Jordan Matson; daughter-in-law, Brenda Matson; brother, Louis (Vickie) Caprino; brother-in-law, Duane (Alice) Matson; sisters-in-law, Marlene (George) Martin, Susan (Ray) Oswald, and Lois (Bruce) Losby; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Ruth Smith; husband, Roger Matson Sr.; son, Roger Matson Jr.; sister-in-law, Marilyn Myhre; and brother-in-law, Norman Myhre.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 pm on Thursday, October 6, 2022 at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home and Cremation, Sparta, with Pastor Jim Radatz officiating.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 pm, until 6:00 pm, at the funeral home.
