CATARACT - Donald DeWitt Rugg, 76, of Cataract, died Monday, November 14, 2022 at his home, after battling cancer. He was born in Sparta, on March 17, 1946, to Willard and Evelyn (Berry) Rugg. He grew up in Cataract, where he lived his entire life.
Donald married Verna Kay Johnson on June 19, 1965. Throughout his life, Donald worked many construction related jobs. He was employed by the Sparta Area School District for 37 years, until his retirement in 2011. He also worked as a Captain and Volunteer at Erv’s Rural Fire Department for 26 years.
In his free time, Donald enjoyed gardening, spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, and camping.
Donald is survived by his wife, Verna (Johnson) Rugg; children, Sherri (Russell) Kvistad, and Todd (special friend Melissa) Rugg; sisters, Carol (Dennis) Leis, and Darlene Guinn; brothers, Gale (Grenda) Rugg, and Kenneth (Ellen) Rugg; sisters-in-law, Donna Rugg, Doris Burchard, and Mary (Jim) Beavers; grandchildren, Melynda (Tom) Wirt, Kelsey Rugg, Taytum Rugg, and Tanner Rugg; and great granddaughter, Kinley Rugg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Evelyn Rugg; brother, Alan Rugg; and brothers-in-law, Harvey Leis and James Guinn.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 18, 2022 at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home and Cremation, Sparta, with Pastor David Huber officiating. Burial will be in Cataract Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited for visitation from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be offered at www.schanhoferfh.com
