Cousins share random messages of kindness in random locations around Tomah

Sometimes you can find kindness when you are not even looking for it.

Sometimes the search may take a little effort. Two Tomah cousins are hopeful their summer time project will culminate in spreading a little kindness if people make an effort to find it.

Brilee Brooker and Emma Waltemath are 10-year-old cousins who both attend LaGrange Elementary School in Tomah.

Earlier this summer the cousins started a project to take landscape rocks and paint random messages of kindness on them using Tomah Timberwolves school colors, black and gold. The rocks were painted black, the messages written in gold.

The girls then hit the streets of Tomah on foot to hide the rocks in random locations, yet not too hard to locate by someone who may be walking by.

By park benches, street lights, planters and other locations, no real rhyme or reason, said Brooker.

The girls started the project around three weeks ago and have hidden approximately 60 rocks to date. Their goal is to hide another 40 rocks before school starts. They are already painted. They just need to make the time to find hiding spots.

Emma said when people find the rocks they can either keep them or pay it forward and hide them for someone else to find in hopes of spreading a little kindness.

The investment for supplies was minimal. Their grandmother, Lori Welcher, was more than happy to supply the rocks, from landscaping around her house. The girls tried to come up with different messages and other designs for each rock, but conceded they had to double up their messages on a few rocks.

So for anyone walking around Tomah feeling the world is lacking some kindness keep your eyes open. It could be around the corner thanks to Brilee and Emma.
