On January 28th, the Monroe County Land Conservation Department will be hosting a Land Stewardship Awards Banquet, to recognize and celebrate the 2022 Conservation Farmer, Conservationist, and Tree Farmer of the Year. The celebration starts at 5 p.m. and will be held at the American Legion in Sparta, located at 1116 Angelo Road. The registration deadline is January 23rd. The banquet is open to the public. There will be a meal, youth poster contest winners recognition and award presentations.

The winners being celebrated for 2022 are as follows:

-Conservationist of the Year– Carol & Ned Gatzke.

-Tree Farmer of the Year – Tana & Bill Johnson. William and Tana Johnson

-Conservation Farmer of the Year – Brueggen Family Dairy Farm, Inc. Jack Herricks, a farmer near Cashton, nominated the Brueggen Family farm.

Randy Brueggen and his family live in Jefferson township. They operate a dairy farm, on over 800 acres of land. The land is composed of cropland, woodlands and pastures. The Brueggens implement a plethora of conservation practices, making them an easy choice for the award. Among the practices the Brueggens utilize are: contour strips, no-till farming, cover crops, grass water ways, waste storage systems, Grade Stabilization Structure and Barnyard Filter strip System.

The Brueggens are also participants in farmland preservation and they follow a conservation plan, as well as a nutrient-management plan. They will be receiving their award on January 28th, at the Monroe County Land Conservation’s Land Stewardship Banquet. Tickets for the event are $15 for adults and $10 for youth. Tickets can be purchased through the Land Conservation Department, located at 820 Industrial Drive, Suite 3, in Sparta.
