The Bangor girls’ basketball team has already punched their ticket to the regional semifinals. They’ve done so without picking up a basketball.
The top-seeded Cardinals (23-2), ranked No. 2 in the latest WisSports.net coaches’ poll, moved on to the next round after No. 16 seed Granton (0-19), their scheduled first-round opponent, informed them of their decision to forfeit.
Granton made the cancellation known on Thursday, February 17, meaning their game set for February 22 will not be played. Granton dropped out of the playoffs due to the 70-mile drive combined with the stark competitive imbalance in the matchup.
It’s been a rough 2021-22 campaign for the winless Bulldogs, who went 0-18 during the regular season and failed to reach double digits as a team in five of those losses.
Having now advanced to the regional semifinals for an 11th consecutive year in the most peculiar of ways, the Cardinals will await to face either No. 8 seed Loyal (10-14) or No. 9 seed Pittsville (12-11) Friday, February 25 at 7 p.m. in Bangor.
