Riders wrangle wet rodeo

Posted

The rainy weather made for one wet rodeo weekend when the Tomah High School Regional Rodeo Association hosted their annual rodeo at Tomah’s Recreation Park last Friday through Sunday.

Junior high students, high school aged students and adults (open division) competed.

Jaden Johnson, 13, of Tomah, competed in the sloppy event. He and his horse, Shotgun, came in second in “Chute Dogging.’”

“You come out of a gate, turn the steer and flip it over on its side,” Johnson explained.

He said his favorite parts about participating in rodeos are “competing and hanging with friends.”

Another competitor, Jace Loch, 13, of Belleview, Iowa, came in second in team roping during the rodeo.

He said riding and roping are his favorite events. His father, Jason, said this was the “second sloppiest rodeo” his son has ever attended.

Jaden said he has been competing in rodeos “for forever” with his horse, Siete (Spanish for seven).

Josie Waldenberger, 15, of Holmen, and her horse, Sticks, also competed.

“I do barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying and light rifle shooting,” she said. ‘I won the shooting for the weekend.” Waldenberger explained that event, which took place at the Tomah-Warrens Sportsmans alliance in Warrens.

“You have a 22 and shoot in three positions,” she said. “One is prone (laying down), kneeling and standing.”

The high school freshman has been participating since sixth grade.
